Overcoming Stage Fright for Beginners
The first step in basic public speaking is overcoming the fear of speaking in front of a crowd. Our material discusses the psychological causes of this anxiety and provides practical techniques to alleviate it, such as positive visualization and abdominal breathing techniques.
We emphasize that nervousness is normal and can be managed with thorough preparation. Through self-study, you will learn how to appear calm even when your heart is racing.
What you will learn:identification of stage anxiety triggers, diaphragmatic breathing exercises, pre-performance visualization techniques, and mental preparation routines that can be done alone at home.
Module 02 — Vocal Instruments
Vocal Mastery: Articulation and Intonation
The voice is a speaker's main instrument. In this basic module, participants are taught how to perform vocal warm-ups to maintain voice clarity. We discuss the importance of articulation so that every word is clearly heard by the audience, as well as intonation variation to avoid a monotonous speaking tone.
Proper volume control is also a focus so that the message can reach the entire room without having to shout excessively. You will practice reading texts with various rhythms to find the most comfortable and effective vocal register.
Body Language and Facial Expressions
More than half of our communication is conveyed through non-verbal language. We provide guidance on standing positions that project authority, how to use your hands to reinforce talking points, and the importance of eye contact with the audience.
Friendly and open facial expressions are also studied to build rapport with listeners from the very first second you stand in front of them. Body language that is aligned with your words will significantly increase your credibility as a speaker.
- →Balanced standing posture and stable stance
- →Open hand gestures, not crossing your chest
- →Eye contact shifting between individual audience members
- →Facial expression practice in front of a mirror
Simple Speech Structure: Opening, Body, Closing
A beginner speaker is often confused about where to start. We provide a simple speech framework that is easy to follow, from how to create an attention-grabbing opening, delivering main points in an organized manner, to closing with a memorable message.
By following this structure, you will no longer feel lost in the middle of a talk or lose your logical flow when conveying ideas to others.
Opening (Hook)
Grab attention with a question, a short story, or surprising data. Avoid opening with apologies or generic greetings that weaken the first impression.
Body (Main Points)
Organize points systematically, with a maximum of three main ideas. Each point is followed by concrete examples so the audience can relate the theory to real situations they are familiar with.
Closing (Call to Action)
Close with a memorable message and a clear call to action. Repeat the core message once so the audience takes home one main idea you want to convey.
Effective Use of Visual Aids
This basic material also covers the use of presentation media such as slides or other props. We teach the "less is more" principle in creating slides so as not to distract the audience's attention from the speaker.
You will learn how to choose relevant images and use minimalist text that is easy to read from a distance. Visual aids should support your message, not replace your own speaking ability. Slides that are too dense actually make the audience stop listening and start reading.
Improvisation Techniques for Unexpected Situations
Sometimes, things do not go according to plan, such as technical glitches or forgetting material. We provide tips on how to perform short improvisations so that the presentation continues smoothly without looking panicked.
The ability to remain calm and keep speaking despite obstacles is a sign of a mature speaker. The improvisation exercises we provide are designed to hone your creativity and speed of thought in high-pressure situations.
Knowing Your Audience Early
Although this is a basic level, it is important to understand who you are talking to. We provide simple guidance on how to conduct small research on your potential audience, such as age, professional background, and what they expect from your presentation.
By adjusting the language and relevant examples, your message will be more easily accepted and understood by them. Effective communication is communication that is centered on the audience, not on the speaker's pride.
Consistency Practice and Self-Evaluation
Success in basic public speaking depends heavily on how often you practice. We suggest participants utilize mirrors or video recordings on their phones as a means of self-practice.
Through this platform, we provide evaluation sheets that you can use to assess progress every week. Focus on small, continuous improvements rather than trying to be perfect overnight. Consistency is the key to building self-confidence.
- 01Video recording of practice with a phone
- 02Weekly self-assessment sheet
- 03Notes on vocal habits and gestures
- 04Daily practice target checklist
Basic Ethics of Public Speaking
We instill ethical values from the basic level, such as the importance of punctuality and respect for the allotted duration. In addition, we teach how to respond to questions from the audience politely, even if the questions are critical in tone.
Having a professional and polite attitude will make you respected as a speaker, regardless of how proficient your speaking techniques are at the moment. Ethics is the foundation of your long-term reputation as a public communicator.
Moving to the Next Level
After mastering these basics, you will have a strong foundation to learn more complex techniques such as debating or negotiation. This basic program is just the beginning of your long journey in mastering public communication.
We encourage every participant to keep learning and not be easily satisfied with initial achievements. Self-directed education at Lunovon is designed to support your growth at every stage, from beginner to experienced speaker.
